Our craft

Every hat is treated as an original.

Our work is built on individual assessment and methods chosen for the hat in front of us.

The Hat Lab was founded by Patricio, who brings 14 years of hat experience to the bench. He trained under Bruno Lacorazza and Adriana Guzman, studying hatmaking, restoration, shaping, material selection, fit, and design.

He spent more than a decade helping manage a North Miami hat store, where his work connected him with clients across entertainment, professional sports, business, television, film, collectors, and private commissions.

The Hat Lab operates with consistent standards. Work is carried out by trained hands to the same process and the same documentation, regardless of who is at the bench.

Method

How the work is done.

Individual assessment

Before anything begins, the hat is examined for material, construction, age, condition, and previous treatment. That assessment determines the method — not the other way around.

Felt and premium fur felt

Wool, rabbit, hare, and beaver felts behave differently under moisture, heat, and friction. Each is cleaned and worked with a method suited to its fiber and finish.

Crown and brim structure

A hat holds its lines through structure. We rebuild crown definition and brim geometry with steam and wooden blocks sized to the hat's own dimensions.

Cleaning

Surface care and cleaning are chosen for the material at hand, working to reduce dirt, perspiration, oils, and staining without stripping the finish.

Reshaping and blocking

Shaping is done by hand and by degrees. Force is never a substitute for patience, heat, and the right block.

Finishing and handling

Ribbons, sweatbands, and linings are set by hand, and each hat is documented, tissue-wrapped, and boxed before it returns to you.

Restoration philosophy

We tell you what we believe is achievable before work begins. Original material, patina, and maker's marks are treated as part of the hat, and preservation takes priority over aggressive treatment.

Every hat has a story. Our job is to help it continue.
